PPC and SEO are often handled separately. However, by combining these two tactics, retailers can obtain far greater business results and SERP outcomes.

Many e-commerce retailers consider their PPC and SEO marketing strategies to be separate entities. Sometimes, they are even viewed as alternatives to one another, with brands only investing in one at a time.

Of course, this is a tragic mistake as PPC and SEO strategies are necessary to integrate into one another for a site to reach its fullest potential in the SERPs.

The next big thing in Web Development after PWAs

Introduction

Accelerated Media Pages (AMP) is an open-source HTML framework that provides you with a way to create simple yet fast and smooth loading web pages with a priority for user experience. The adoption of AMP increased not only page speeds but also improved conversion rates as the pages were very appealing to the user.

AMP stories are a result of one major let down of AMP websites. They lacked a story-based immersive web experience. This gave birth to AMP stories. AMP stories is dubbed as the “visual storytelling for the open web”.

AMP is one of the technologies originally proposed by Google.

AMP stories,

  • Immerse your readers in fast-loading full-screen experiences
  • Easily create visual narratives, with engaging animations and tappable interactions

According to Fahad Muhammad, AMP stories were first launched with 8 publishers. Once they gained the much-needed traction, it was made open for all developers.

AMP stories follow the same format as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. They are visually similar and provide an immersive wholesome experience for the user.

As a side-note, web apps cannot be implemented as AMPs, mainly (but not only) because, they rely heavily on logic. To speed up your web app make sure you build your frontend code following best practice. You may also want to publish and reuse your code (after spending considerable time optimizing it), using cloud component hubs like Bit.dev.

Why should you use AMP Stories?

  • Create beautiful and engaging content easily.
  • Lightning-fast with their loading times and allow your audience to be engaged with the rich content you provide.
  • Immersive storytelling as the stories expand and visually fill the screen with an appeal to the user.
  • Creative flexibility for editorial freedom and branding as they come built-in preset layouts and components with added flexibility.
  • By being a part of the open web, AMP story links are sharable and linkable.
  • They provide Robust Advertising Support by enabling monetization capability for publishers using full-screen immersive story ads and using affiliate links.

You can get started building with built-in templates here.

Criticisms

According to Wiki, here are a few criticisms faced by AMP stories. Although wiki is not the best place to use as a reference, this particular content has genuine references to additional material.

Google Control

AMP has been widely criticized by many in the tech industry for being an attempt by Google to exert its dominance on the Web by dictating how websites are built and monetized, and that “AMP is Google’s attempt to lock publishers into its ecosystem”. AMP has also been linked to Google’s attempt to deprecate URLs so that users will not be able to immediately see whether they are viewing a webpage on the open Web or an AMP page that is hosted on Google’s servers.

Pre-rendering Problems

AMP’s fast loading speeds are partly due to the pre-rendering done by Google in the search result’s page. This is no way in the hands of the user and can fetch unwanted data.

AMP prefetching and pre-rendering results in some additional data (and power) use with each search. The average 1.4 MB of additional data per search that is used for pre-rendering an AMP page that the user may not visit is not trivial overhead for certain users with limited data plans

Monetization Issues

Some publishers have complained that AMP pages generate less advertising revenue per page than non-AMP pages. They mention that AMP pages rely on heavily standardized components for ads such as standardized banner ad units. This takes away the option for customizable components and popup ads that can attract consumers.

More Resources

If you are interested in knowing more about AMP stories and AMP websites here are few resources you need to checkout.

Conclusion

AMPs allow a whole new level of user experience to the end-user with selective content. Although this was kind of a closed-door project, it is now towards a more open governance model. Although there are quite a few criticisms for AMP, it provides you with some promising benefits.

As announced by AMP’s tech lead Malte at AMP Conf ’19, AMP does not stand for Accelerated Mobile Pages anymore.
